CANOSSIAN DAUGHTERS OF CHARITY

PROVINCE OF MARY IMMACULATE, SOUTH INDIA

Make Jesus known and loved, since he is not loved because he is not known" -St. Magdalene of Canossa

Canossian Sisters South India

St. Magdalene of Canossa (1 March 1774 – 10 April 1835)  was an Italian religious from Verona and Foundress of the  two Canossian orders. Magdalene was a leading advocate for the poor in her region after she witnessed the plight of the poor following the spill over effects of the French Revolution into the Italian peninsula through the Napoleonic invasion of the northern territories. Magdalene dedicated her life for  the poor and started a new way of religious life for both men and women. She is considered as the Woman of the 19th  Century.

Her beatification was celebrated in Rome on 7 December 1941 and she was later canonized as a saint in Saint Peter’s Square on 2 October 1988.

OUR SPIRITUALITY

The spirit of the Institute is a gift of God to the founder for the Institute. The specific nature of the spirituality of our Institute has been defined by our very Foundress herself in the Preface to the Rules: “It is the fulfillment of the two great precepts of Charity, according to the Spirit and in imitation of Jesus Christ Crucified”

MARY, MOTHER OF CHARITY AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS

Magdalene acknowledged Mary, Mother of Charity at the foot of the Cross as the true Mother and Foundress of the Institute.

We turn to Mary, Mother of Sorrows so that all our actions may be animated by His Spirit, “a Spirit of charity, gentleness, meekness and humility; a spirit of zeal and fortitude; a most amiable, most generous and most patient spirit”.
